![]() ![]() While on vacation, they discover that a group of English witches are meeting under the guise of a charity conference. Years later, after the death of Luke’s parents, Helga becomes his legal guardian and the two take a vacation to a seaside hotel. Helga has since sought to destroy witches, and I believe is considered a witch hunter in the novel. When Helga was a child, a friend of hers had been captured by a witch and forced to live out her days inside of a painting. The plot (of the movie at least) revolves around a young boy, Luke, and his grandmother, Helga. This film incorporates many themes about witchcraft one finds in this sort of production. While it’s portrayal of witchcraft is unequivocally negative, Anjelica Huston’s characterization of the Grand High Witch is truly one to be reckoned with. ![]() “The Witches” was the last movie Henson worked on directly before his death, and was similarly the last film made based on Dahl’s work prior to Dahl’s death. ![]() The film was produced by Jim Henson Productions and as such includes puppetry and creatures one would expect from his production company. The movie stars Anjelica Huston as Miss Ernst, the Grand High Witch. “The Witches” is a 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, which was was adapted into a dark fantasy film in 1990 of the same name. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Being paid as a beauty foil, to basically flaunt your flaws seemed like such a rich source of conflict. Although written in the 1860’s, the story felt so modern and immediately relatable to our beauty-obsessed world. Zola’s short story focused on the creation of an agency of ugly women and the idea of such a place was both horrifying and fascinating to me. Sing ¿Quién es la Señorita? one more time, Willis! Other than that, it's a rockin' story!īut no matter what, I will always adore Willis the Martian with my entire heart and soul. There's a pretty heavy gun ownership rights theme running through this book that may irk some readers, the sexual roles are straight from the 1950s ( Red Planet was written in 1949, so understandable enough), people in authority tend to be corrupt and/or incompetent, and you have to be able to suspend disbelief in light of what we now know about life on Mars. Heinlein is especially imaginative here, with the unique Martian civilization and the realistic (at least for the time) details about humans trying to survive in the hostile environment of Mars. ![]() It’s up to these two boys to save their hometown and their Martian friend from the nefarious forces of evil. Even Blake noted that he was surprised by this particular charity project that Dahl had in mind: One such institution is the Dyslexia Institute. Aside from being extremely patient and big-hearted enough to respond to thousands of fan mails he received on a daily basis, he also devoted much of his time and resources to help various charities. When I read the Foreword written by Quentin Blake, I had a much clearer idea of the man that Roald Dahl had been. I thought that our Dahl review for our “Everything Dahl and Magical” theme this September and October would be a good comeback post.
